Inside The Box: Sennheiser Momentum 2 vs 3

The Sennheiser Momentum 2 and Momentum 3 come in rigid and trustworthy packaging, with the headphones placed securely inside the box with some additional contents.

Sennheiser Momentum 2: When you first unbox the Sennheiser Momentum 2, the first thing that you will find is a black travelling bag or a hard carrying case and some instruction manuals (including a quick guide and a safety guide). Inside the travelling bag is a soft carrying case or a black stringed bag with an in-flight adapter; USB cable with micro USB connector; audio cable with 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm jack plug and the momentum 3 wireless headphones themselves.

Sennheiser Momentum 3:  The packaging of the Sennheiser Momentum 3 is quite similar to that of its predecessor, just with a little bit of color difference. The hard carrying case comes in grey instead of black for this model. Inside the bag include instruction manuals; the momentum 3 wireless; audio 3.5 mm; USB-C to USB-A Adapter and USB-C Cable.

Winner: Sennheiser Momentum 3

In my opinion, the packaging of the momentum 3 looks much cleaner and well thought out than that of momentum 2. I personally prefer the grey bag compared to the black one. Not only that, the Sennheiser Momentum 3 comes with a number of USB cables for a variety of connection options.

Design and Fit

Both the Sennheiser Momentum 2 and Momuntum 3 are sophisticated looking headphones.

Sennheiser Momentum 2: At first sight, the Momentum 2 looks quite similar to any other headphones in the market, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love it. It has a flexible headband that is made entirely of leather supported by stainless-steel rails, holding the two large earcups in place.

However when you look a little closer, you will see some differences that makes it stand out from any other headphones. The first biggest difference is that these headphones are completely foldable, making them extremely portable and easy to carry.

The right earcup houses the controls for power and audio. The power button can also be used to pair up the headphones with different devices. To adjust the volume, there is a multi-function button that can be flicked up and down.

Better fit

The earcups of these wireless headphones have also been customized to be larger for a better fit. They are composed of soft leather with thick padding for a comfortable audio experience. They can be worn for a long period of time without the ears and the head feeling much pressure and heating up.

Sennheiser Momentum 3: Sennheiser has decided to keep its minimal aesthetic third-generation model look with the Momentum series. The Momentum 3 looks quite similar to the Momentum 2 with the circum aural earcups, leather headband and stainless steel frame.

The earcups are bigger and better with the new Momentum wireless. They can be rotated to be contained inside the grey fabric case. Now since they are bigger, they might be a bit heavy but trust me when I say that they are extremely comfortable- they apply just the right amount of pressure around your head to be stable and in place. The thick earpads are not only very comfortable but they also provide some noise cancelling properties.

The controls in the Momentum 2 are different. The toggle present in the earlier model that was used to control the volume are now replaced by two volume buttons which can be pressed to play, pause, forward or backward music, end calls and even read out the battery charge status.

There are connections for the two cables that have been included in the packaging, which are a USB-C port for charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack in the side of the right earcup panel. The audio cable can be used with ANC despite not having a remote or mic.

Winner: Sennheiser Momentum 3

Firstly, the color options for the wireless headphones are different. Whilst both wireless earphones are available in the classic black color, momentum 2 is also available in ivory, and momentum 3 in sand white.

When compared, the Sennheiser Momentum 3 is much heavier, weighing about 305 grams whereas the Momentum Wireless 2 weighs around 265 grams. But that doesn’t mean that it is a burden on the ears, rather it’s a blessing!

The earcups are much more padded and larger in the Momentum 3, allowing for the ears to rest more comfortably during the long musical sessions. The headband is more extended since the size is large, which means they are more flexible.

Overall, the finishing of the momentum 3 looks much cleaner and well thought. They’re also more comfortable and flexible.

Sound Quality

Sennheiser does not disappoint us when it comes to audio performance. Although the Momentum 2 and momentum 3 are both visually similar, they do have a lot of difference in their audio performance.

Momentum did not lose its signature sound in the wireless earphones that it has for its wired headphones. Although we will agree that the sound performance is a tad bit better in the wired headphones, the wireless is exciting as well.

Sennheiser Momentum 2: Usually Bluetooth headphones are a little off balance in the sound department. But with the Sennheiser Momentum 2, you’re in for a surprise. They sound extremely rich with just the amount of balance needed.

The bass is heavy, but it has a lot of details. It may sound strong and punchy- but not in a way that it overpowers the sound and clutters all details, but rather in a way that it brings all the notes together with excitement and power.

The area in which the headphones really show their capability is the midrange. Although the bass response is strong, the midrange uncovers the littlest of details with precision and clarity. The vocals and instruments can easily be separated and distinguished without a sweat. Moreover, the timing with these headphones is just spot on. They did not miss a beat in the time we listened to them, keeping us extremely hypnotized in their splendid performance.

The treble is very soft, articulate and warm. They do not sound harsh at all, unlike some headphones where the treble is overemphasized.

SoundStage

Usually, for closed-back headphones, you’d expect a poor soundstage. But Sennheiser has shown its best of abilities with its momentum series, offering spacious soundstage and leaving every audiophile impressed at the expressive details in sound.

Sennheiser Momentum 3: The Sennheiser Momentum 3 absolutely sounds superb in first listen. These wireless headphones have a wide frequency range, well-balance sound response and an immersive soundstage.

The wireless headphones perform really well in the bass region. The bass response is well balanced and has great extension, meaning that the sennheiser wireless headphones can produce booming bass. Although the boom might be a bit too much for some, it is a treat to the ears particularly for people who enjoy dancing to the beats of EDM and bass-heavy music.

The mid-range has a very well balanced response in the Momentum 3 wireless headphones. The vocals and the lead instruments have very accurate details and are crystal clear. Although the vocals might sound a bit blurred sometimes, it is very rare that it will catch the listener’s attention.

The treble is also very well balanced and precise, with the right amount of brightness. They do not sound too sharp and are very clearly detailed. The stereo imaging is impressive considering they are closed back over ear wireless headphones.

Since the headphones are over-ear, there may be a possibility of the soundstage being narrow and limited. But the Sennheiser Momentum 3 has a spacious soundstage that does not disappoint the audiophiles.

Winner: Sennheiser Momentum 3

It is of no doubt that the Momentum 2 exhibits great audio performance, but when compared to the Momentum 3, you’d want to grab the newer model right away.

Let’s look at the technicalities first if you don’t believe us. The Momentum 3 offers a humongous frequency range and impedance and sensitivity ratings which are much higher than that of the Momentum 2. This becomes even more evident when you put the headphones on and experience immersive sound quality.

Sennheiser has kept up the vibrant sounds of the Momentum 2 and introduced much better quality of bass with balanced highs and mids in its new Momentum 3 wireless headphones. Obviously, the Momentum 3 excels in sound performance.

Battery life

Sennheiser Momentum 2:  Although the Sennheiser Momentum 2 takes a while to charge, it does offer a long battery life. These remarkable headphones have been designed to last 22.8 hours after one charging, which is basically an entire day. These wireless headphones can also play music when they are charging so you can multitask quite easily. However, one drawback is that there is no power saving mode so even if you leave them the battery will drain out.

Sennheiser Momentum 3: The Sennheiser Momentum 3 features about 17 hours of continuous playback, meaning that you can use it for pretty much an entire day without charging it. With the noise cancelling feature turned on, the battery remains charged for around 13 hours. When the charge is zero, the device can be quickly connected with a USB-C cable for charging it. If the momentum 3 is charged for just 10 minutes, you will get around one and a half hour of listening.

The best thing about the Momentum 3 headphones is that they have a power saving mode. When you take the headphones off your head, the sennheiser momentum 3 enters into a standby mode automatically to ensure that the charge is not lost. To check the battery life, you can hold the multifunction button on the earcups for two seconds.

Winner: Sennheiser Momentum 2

Although the momentum 3 has power saving mode to retain the charge, its battery life lower than that of the Momentum 2. Whilst the Momentum 3 has 17 hours of battery life, the Momentum 2 offers up to 22.8 hours.

Additional Features

Each headphone has its own unique features which make them special.

Sennheiser Momentum 2:  The Sennheiser Momenum 2 wireless has the following features:

As a result, the overall frequency is covered to eliminate any sort of ambient noise.

VoiceMax Technology

The Sennheiser Momentum 2 features dual built-in microphones which work together for perfect speech recognition and elimination of external ambient noise.

Apt X audio coding

This feature ensures that the sound being delivered is crystal clear and offers a full stereo experience.

Sennheiser Momentum 3:  The Sennheiser Momentum 3 has the features as follows:

Wireless Technology

The new Momentum 3 supports Bluetooth wireless technology 5.0 and also comes with a USB-C port for variable connection options.

Power saving feature

There is an automatic switching on and off option in the Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless that we absolutely love. As soon as you’re done listening with these headphones, you can take them off and fold them and they will automatically switch off on folding.

This is very helpful because it allows for the headphones to retain more charge. These wireless headphones can also pause the music when they are taken off.

Improved ANC and Transparent Hearing

The Active Noise Cancellation feature in the Sennheiser Momentum 3 is more improved than its predecessor, eliminating ambient noise even better. It also offers three levels for the ANC mode, which you can easily control with the app.

Transparent Hearing is an important feature because if you’re driving or on the road with these headphones on listening to your favorite tune, it can easily filter out vital noises such as car honks or announcements. You can turn it off or on according to your environment setting.
